Origin and history

The parish complex of Bessans, classified as Historical Monument in 1996, illustrates five centuries of religious life in the mountains, from the 15th to the 19th century. The construction of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, chapels (such as Saint-Étienne in the 15th century or Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1895) and oratories spread over this period, with late additions such as the Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel in 1895. These buildings, often equipped with liturgical furniture (retardable from the chapels Saint-Claude and Sainte-Marie-Madeleine) or painted decorations (church Saint-Jean-Baptiste, chapel Notre-Dame-des-Grâces), testify to local piety and architectural adaptation to alpine constraints.

Some chapels, such as Saint-Étienne (XV century) or Saint-Claude, retain a remarkable movable heritage, while the oratories, scattered in the hamlets (La Goulaz, Averolle, La Chalpe), reflect a popular devotion anchored in the territory. Their current condition varies: while the central chapels remain in good condition, many d ́oratories, exposed to the weather, are now degraded. The listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1996 allowed to protect this whole, property of the municipality, which covers such places as the Villaron, La Goulaz or the valley of Averolle.

The diversity of the buildings — a main church, fourteen chapels and about twenty d'oratories — underlines the importance of religious practice in the social and spatial organization of Bessans. These buildings, often linked to protective saints (Saint-Bernard de Menthon, Sainte-Anne, Saint-Sébastien), also served as landmarks in a hostile mountain environment. Their geographical distribution, from ridges (Notre-Dame de Tierce) to valleys (oratories of Ribon), shows a dispersed but structured human occupation around the faith, with places of worship adapted to pastoral activities and seasonal movements.
