Saint-Léger-la-Palu church: inscription by decree of 17 April 1935

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Léger-la-Palu, located in Jaunay-Marigny (formerly Marigny-Brizay), is a religious building built in the 4th quarter of the 12th century. It is representative of the late Romanesque architecture of the Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. Its registration as a Historical Monument by decree of 17 April 1935 underlines its heritage value, although its exact location was considered fair (note 5/10) in the geographical databases.

The municipality of Jaunay-Marigny, identified by Insee code 86115, historically depended on the diocese of Poitiers. The church, a municipal property, embodies the central role of medieval parishes in the social and spiritual organization of the countryside. At that time, rural churches served as places of worship, but also as community landmarks for agricultural activities and local gatherings. Their construction often reflected the relative prosperity of the lords or village communities.

Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) indicate that the building is still standing, although its current state and uses (visits, cults, events) are not specified. Its approximate address, 3 Place Saint-Léger, corresponds to the GPS coordinates recorded, confirming its anchoring in the landscape of Marigny-Brizay, now merged with Jaunay-Marigny. No information is provided on any changes after its initial construction.
