Origin and history

The church of the Nativity-de-la-Sainte-Vierge de Bonneil, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It consists of a nave, two sides, a transept and a choir typical of Gothic architecture of this period. The vaults of the lower side and the crucifixes, as well as the square bell tower built on the north crucifix, date back to the 16th century. The portal, on the other hand, retains its 12th century Romanesque style, while the southern crusillon houses the chapel of the Virgin.

The church suffered significant damage during the First World War, requiring partial reconstruction in the early twentieth century. Despite these works, the building still suffers from old age. Classified as a historical monument by decree of 14 February 1921, it also houses several objects protected by historical monuments. Its location, in the hollow of a loop of the Marne Valley, and its history related to the conflicts of the 20th century, make it a significant architectural and memorial testimony.

Bonneil, like many villages in Aisne, was deeply marked by the destruction of the Great War. Local churches, often at the heart of community life, have played a central role in the moral and physical reconstruction of devastated territories. Their preservation, like that of the church of Bonneil, reflects people's attachment to their heritage, despite the challenges of time and conflict.

Future

The church badly damaged during the First World War must have been partly rebuilt and still suffers from old age.
