Origin and history

The Saint-Lucain church of Loigny-la-Battle was built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century to commemorate the battle of 2 December 1870, between 40,000 French soldiers and 35,000 German soldiers. This conflict, marking the defeat of the Loire Army, claimed nearly 9,000 victims. The building, designed by architect Lucien Douillard, incorporates an ossuary crypt housing the remains of the generals of Sonis and Charette, as well as those of unidentified soldiers. The walls of the abside and the vault, decorated with historical and religious paintings, bear the names of 700 recognized soldiers.

The Battle of Loigny is famous for the engagement of the Western Volunteers, former pontifical zouaves led by Colonel Athanase de Charette. General Louis-Gaston de Sonis, wounded during the fighting, displayed the banner of the Sacré-Coeur, a symbol of French resistance. Partially classified as historical monuments in 1983, the church forms the first French memorial site dedicated to this battle with the 1870 museum and the path of memory (the Cross of General of Sonis, monument of the Sacred Heart).

The village of Loigny, renamed Loigny-la-Battle in 1901, derives its name from a Christian martyr of the fifth century, Saint Lucain, whose cephalophore legend is linked to the territory. The commune, rural and agricultural, is today a historic pilgrimage site, preserving the memory of the fighting through its commemorative ensemble. The church, a communal property, remains an architectural and symbolic testimony of the Franco-German war of 1870.
