Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame de Beaupréau, located in the commune of Beaupréau-en-Mauges (formerly Beaupréau) in Maine-et-Loire, is a religious building built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It is part of the neogothic current, inspired by the architectural forms of the thirteenth century. The architect Alfred Tessier was the architect, while the stained glass windows, made between 1875 and 1895 by the painter-glassmaker Heinrich Ely, celebrated the glory of the Church and the Virgin. These artistic and architectural elements make it a significant testimony of the religious art of this period.
The church has been listed as historical monuments since 2006, a protection that covers its facades, roofs and stained glass windows. The Merimée base precisely locates the church square, confirming its anchoring in the historic centre of Beaupréau. Owned by the municipality, it also illustrates the role of local communities in preserving 19th-century religious heritage, a time when churches served as a place for community gathering and demonstration of faith.
Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its architectural style and iconographic programme, while mentioning its heritage value in the Maine-et-Loire department. The building is thus part of a wider network of historical monuments of the Angevin, reflecting the importance of Marian worship and religious reconstructions in the 19th century, a period of spiritual and artistic renewal in France.
