Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Locmaria, on Belle-Île-en-Mer, is an emblematic religious building of the Morbihan. Founded in 1070 by the monks of Sainte-Croix Abbey in Quimperlé, it is considered the oldest church on the island. Its current architecture is the result of several works, including repairs and expansion in 1694, as well as the addition of a bell tower in the form of a "popper" in 1714.

The lateral chapel, built in 1868, completes the building, while 19th-century stained glass windows, made by master glassmaker Le Nezet, adorn the nave south side. These elements illustrate the stylistic and functional evolution of the church over the centuries, mixing medieval heritage and more recent additions.

The church has been protected since 1986, listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage under reference IA00008218. This ranking underlines its historical and architectural importance for the Brittany region, as well as its role in the local religious heritage. Its characteristic bell tower and stained glass windows make it a remarkable monument to Belle-Île-en-Mer.
