Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame de Fontenay-le-Comte, located in the Vendée department in Pays de la Loire, is a flamboyant Gothic building whose construction takes place mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries. It replaces a Romanesque building attested by an crypt discovered in 1846, dating from the late 11th or early 12th century. The Gothic reconstruction, launched in 1423 with the vaults, ended in the 16th century with the bedside and the west gate, integrating reborn elements such as the chapel of the Brissons (1540-1543).

The Wars of Religion (16th century) severely damaged the building: the vaults collapsed in 1568, the arrow was destroyed in 1574, and the church served as a food store. In the 17th century, major repairs were undertaken, including the reconstruction of the bell tower (1700) and the addition of a marble altarpiece (1687). Transformed into the Temple of Reason in 1794 during the Revolution, it was restored to worship in 1800 after iconoclastic destruction.

Ranked a historic monument in 1862, the church enjoyed major restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Architects Pierre-Théophile Segretain (arrow, 1844), Henri Deverin (chevet, 1896-1912), and Henri Chaine (voûts, 1896-1902) intervene to restore its radiance to the building. The Romanesque crypt, the Gothic portals (including the North Gate, restored in 1854), and the 83-metre bell tower – described as one of the most beautiful architectural pieces in the kingdom – make it a jewel of the Salesian heritage.

The bell tower, decorated with 19 statues representing saints and religious figures, dominates the city. Its architecture combines a square base (40 m), an octagonal section (50 m), and an arrow culminating at 80 m, topped by a cross. The portals, especially that of the North (1470-1480), illustrate the flamboyant style with sculpted voussures of wise and mad Virgins, although partially destroyed during religious or revolutionary conflicts.

The church, originally attached to the diocese of Maillezais (1317-1648), passed under that of Luçon after the Concordat of 1817. Its history reflects the political and religious upheavals of the region, from the wars of Religion to the Revolution and later restorations. Today, it remains a symbol of the architectural and historical heritage of Fontenay-le-Comte, bearing witness to nearly a thousand years of local history.
