Origin and history

Sainte-Afre de Riedisheim Church is a Catholic parish church located in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region. It is dedicated to Afre d'Augsburg, a paleo-Christian martyrdom. The current neo-classical building was built in 1838 according to the plans of the Mulhousian architect Jean-Charles Dufau, after the demolition of a previous church erected in 1759. The organ, classified as a historic monument in 1979, was built in 1853 by Joseph Stiehr and restored several times, notably by Alfred Kern in 1979.

The present church replaces two earlier buildings: a first church built in 1655, then a second, consecrated in 1759 and demolished in 1837. Several movable objects, including a 17th century crucifix and a reliquary of the early 20th century, are listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage. The church underwent major restoration between 1968 and 1970.

The organ of the church of Sainte-Afre, classified as a historical monument, has 28 games, including 16 originals from Stiehr, distributed on two keyboards and a pedal boat. He underwent several changes, notably in 1928, 1952 and 1979, where Alfred Kern built a new buffet. This instrument, with its mechanical tractions, is an important testimony of the Alsatian organizational heritage.
