Origin and history

The church Saint-Georges de Mareau-aux-Bois, located in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a monument dating back to the 11th century. It is located on the northern edge of the Orléans forest, south of the Beauce, in the urban area of Pithiviers. The building, attached to the diocese of Orléans, has a nave with five spans flanked by low side, a transept with semicircular absidioles, and an octagonal bedside. Its bell tower, characteristic of the 11th and 15th centuries, marks the western entrance of the nave.

Major transformations took place in the 15th and 18th centuries: the bedside was rebuilt in the 15th century, while bays were built in the 15th and 18th centuries. The dogive vaults of the first two eastern spans date from the 15th century, while the other, more recent, are made of wood and plaster, just like those of the lower side. A primitive L-abside and a south transept apsidiole were demolished, later replaced. The blanket combines stone (bell tower arrow), slate and flat tiles.

In terms of heritage, the bell tower has been listed as a historic monument since 15 July 1920, while the rest of the church is listed on 6 March 1928. The building, owned by the commune, is part of the parish group of Chilleurs-aux-Bois, within the dean of the Centre-Beauce. Its architecture thus reflects almost a thousand years of history, between Romanesque heritage, Gothic adaptations and modern modifications.

The church plays a central role in local life, both religious and heritage. Its location, close to the forest of Orléans and in an area marked by Beaucéenne agriculture, makes it a historical and cultural landmark for the community. The protections for historical monuments underline its importance in the Loiret regional heritage.
