Origin and history
The Saint-Jacques-d'Assyrie church, located in Hauteluce in Savoie, is a Catholic building dedicated to Saint Jacques de Tarentaise, also known as Jacques d'Assyrie. This monument, built in the 18th century, embodies the religious architecture of this period in the French Alps. Its ranking at Historic Monuments in 1943 underscores its historic importance and its remarkable state of conservation for the time.
The building, owned by the commune of Hauteluce, was officially protected by an order of 13 April 1943. This official recognition reflects its historical and architectural value in the Savoie department, within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The church, located at 34 Rue de l'Église, remains an emblematic place of local heritage, reflecting the religious and cultural history of the valley.
Saint Jacques de Tarentaise, to whom the church is dedicated, is a major figure of the Alpine Christianity of the 5th century. Although the building dates back to the 18th century, this dedication creates a link between ancient religious traditions and Savoyard Baroque architecture. The classification of the church in 1943 preserved this heritage, while offering a material testimony of faith and local history throughout the centuries.
