Origin and history
The church of Saint-Léonard des Granges-le-Roi is a Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Léonard, located in the commune of Granges-le-Roi, Essonne. Its construction begins before the middle of the 12th century, marking its medieval origins. The building preserves architectural traces of that time, including a portal and nave capitals.
Major works took place in the 13th, 15th and 17th centuries, gradually transforming the church. The choir was entirely redone in the 17th century, adding a baroque dimension to the building. These changes reflect the evolution of artistic styles and liturgical needs throughout the centuries.
Since 17 February 1950, the church has been listed as historic monuments, recognizing its heritage value. A local association, S.O.S Church Les Granges, founded in 2000, works actively for its preservation. The building now houses a baroque altarpiece decorated with a 19th century painting, as well as medieval elements.
The church plays a central role in the religious and community life of the Granges-le-Roi. Its hybrid architecture, combining Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque, bears witness to local history and successive artistic influences. It remains an active place of worship and a symbol of the Estonian heritage.
