Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martial de Clugnat, located in the Creuse department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, is a religious building built mainly in the thirteenth century. It was partially redesigned in the 15th century, including the addition of a southern chapel. The building consists of a nave of three spans, the last of which forms the flat-side choir, and two side chapels. The modern northern chapel was designed to imitate the 15th century southern chapel. The murals, such as the Crucifixion or the Virgin holding a phylacter, adorn the first span, while the bell tower, placed to the west, was restored in 2014.
The patronage of the church historically belonged to the Provost of Evaux, highlighting its local anchor. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 13 February 1969, protecting its architecture and murals, with the exception of modern parts. The nave, originally vaulted with warheads redone in the 14th century, was modified in a later restoration, where the vault was replaced by a broken cradle. Elements such as a bay in the middle of the 16th century or sculptures used on the south wall testify to the architectural evolution of the building.
The Church of Saint-Martial illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the region, marked by additions and transformations reflecting the liturgical and aesthetic needs of successive periods. Its bell tower-porch, carved capitals and murals make it a representative example of the Limousin heritage, now owned by the municipality of Clugnat and partially open to the visit.
