Church of Saint Martin: inscription by decree of 16 January 1947

Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Gissey-sous-Flavigny is a religious building built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Located in the Côte d'Or department, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, it is representative of the rural churches of this period, marked by a sober and functional architecture. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by decree of 16 January 1947 bears witness to its heritage value and its importance for the local heritage.

Medieval churches like Saint Martin played a central role in the life of Burgundy rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, where social and religious events took place. At that time, Burgundy was a dynamic region, marked by agriculture, emerging trade and a well-established feudal organization.

These churches, often modest, reflected local resources and know-how, while embodying the faith and cohesion of surrounding villages.
