Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Chagny, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, was built at the end of the 12th century and at the beginning of the 13th century. It replaces an earlier chapel and was founded by Bishop Duran II of Chalon-sur-Saône in 1220, who established there a priory of 12 monks. Its architecture is inspired by the Cistercian order, with a central nave and two lateral naves, while its Romanesque bell tower, described by Victor Hugo as "wide, rough, superb", houses two bells, one of which is 2.3 tons blessed in 1835.
Over the centuries, the building has undergone several changes: the choir was remodeled in the 15th century, the cul-de-four abside replaced by a flat bedside, and a facade span and three northern chapels were added at the end of the 17th century. The porch dates back to 1968. The bell tower, classified as a historic monument in 1932, and the church, registered in 2010, bear witness to its heritage importance. The ensemble reflects a transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles, with carved vaults and capitals.
The church, still dedicated to Catholic worship, belongs to the diocese of Autun and the parish of Saint Martin-des-Trois-Croix. It illustrates the central role of religious buildings in medieval community life, while preserving architectural traces of its successive transformations, from its monastic origin to its modern enlargements.
