Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin du Brignon, located in the commune of the same name in Haute-Loire, is a building dating back to the 15th century, although mentioned in the 12th century. It preserves a Romanesque nave vaulted in a cradle, a polygonal choir with three sides and a flamboyant Gothic portal topped by a bell tower-wall. A high vaulted dogives room, located above the bottom chapel, bears witness to its medieval architecture.

In the 16th century, two side chapels were added, partially modifying the original structure. Major transformations took place in the 19th century: in 1856, communications between the lateral chapels were made; In 1858, the second and third chapels south were built. In 1867, the chapel of the Virgin (north) was rebuilt, followed in 1875 by the creation of stained glass windows dedicated to Saint-Martin, Sainte-Marthe and Saint-Louis, made by the painter Fournier. Finally, in 1881, the northern chapel of the choir was rebuilt.

The building, owned by the municipality, is registered as historical monuments by order of 30 October 1987. Its architecture thus blends Romanesque, Gothic and modern additions, reflecting its evolution throughout the centuries. The western facade, with its sculpted portal and bell tower-wall housing four bells, is one of its major heritage assets.
