West facade with porch: by order of 12 April 1927

Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Ségry, located in the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a 12th century religious building. It is characterized by a unique nave and flat bedside, typical of the rural churches of this period. Its architecture, although remodeled at several times, preserves significant original elements, especially on its western facade, which offers a preserved example of rural Romanesque art of the late twelfth century.

The western facade, entirely old, features a full-walled window adorned with an archvolt and an oric boudin, supported by two columns with capitals carved of foliage. A protruding porch, covered with glacid slabs, overlooks a gate with six monolithic columns, also decorated with capitals with vegetal motifs. Architectural details, such as grotesque-headed modillons or arcatures of the cornice, reveal a poitevin influence, while the cutlery decorated with a braided rope underline the care taken to this building.

The portal, particularly remarkable, combines several decorative styles: outer archicolt is embellished with cabochons, while the harpsichords alternate tores, diamond tips and geometric patterns. These elements, combined with the quality of preservation of the facade, led to the classification of the latter (with its porch) as Historic Monument by order of 12 April 1927. The church, owned by the commune, bears witness to the rural Romanesque heritage of the region.

Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm that the building underwent modifications after its initial construction, without significantly altering its original character. Its approximate address, 2 Rue de l'Église in Ségry, and its Insee code (36215) place it precisely in the territory of Indre, near Châteauroux. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), makes it easy to identify this local heritage.
