Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Marie du Boulou, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is a building whose current structure dates mainly from the seventeenth century. However, it retains a remarkable white marble Romanesque portal, attributed to the famous anonymous sculptor known as Maître de Cabestany. This portal, classified as a historical monument since 1938, is decorated with sculptures depicting scenes of the Childhood of Christ, read from right to left: Announcement to shepherds, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi and Escape in Egypt.

The church porch was classified in 1910 for its heritage value. A frieze above the portal accurately illustrates these biblical episodes, bearing witness to Southern Romanesque art. The building also houses a baroque altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Antoine hermite, located behind the high altar, adding an artistic dimension after its medieval structure.

The church as a whole (excluding already classified portal) was listed as historical monuments in December 2021, recognizing its overall architectural value. Archaeological sources, such as Marcel Durliat's (1955) work, underline its importance in the Romanesque heritage of Roussillon, while more recent works, such as that of Géraldine Mallet (2003), cite it among the forgotten Romanesque churches of the region.

The exact location of the church is specified by the Mérimée and Monumentum bases: it is located on section BB, parcel n° 188, at 349 Saint-Pierre (approximate address), although its official address is 66160 Le Boulou. This dual geographical reference reflects the evolution of administrative divisions and geolocation systems.

The Romanesque portal, the oldest and most remarkable element, is attributed to the Master of Cabestany, a travelling sculptor active in southern France and northern Spain in the 12th century. His style, characterized by hieratic figures and stylized drapes, is illustrated here by narrative scenes of great finesse, typical of Catalan Romanesque art.

Finally, the Sainte-Marie church, owned by the commune of Boulou, is part of a wider heritage complex, including other historical monuments of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Its progressive classification (porch in 1910, portal in 1938, then the entire building in 2021) reflects the growing recognition of its historical and artistic value over the 20th and 21st centuries.
