Origin and history

Saint-Salomon-et-Saint-Grégoire Church of Pithiviers, classified as a Historic Monument in 1912, has its origins at the edge of the 11th and 12th centuries. Consecrated in 1080 by Raynier de Flanderselle, bishop of Orléans, she now retains her original apse (now lateral chapel), the cross of the transept, and the south arm serving as sacristy since the 17th century. These vestiges testify to its medieval foundation, before the subsequent destructions and transformations.

In the 15th century, the church suffered a fire in 1428, requiring partial reconstruction in the 16th century. In 1562, it was damaged by Protestants, and the bell tower burned in 1594. The restorations are increasing: recast portals (1596, 1627, 1635), reconstructed frame arrow (1608–10), wooden vaults (1650), and high altar by Antoine Charpentier (1656–60). This work gives it its present appearance, marked by reborn and classic additions on a Gothic basis.

The 19th century brought new changes: after the fire of the arrow in 1853, a metal arrow was inaugurated in 1862 by Romuald Dufour. Neo-Gothic elements (false triforium, carpentry) were added around 1870. The protection of the monument also evolves: classified in 1912, the arrow was temporarily declassified (1920, 2000), before the hatch tower was again protected in 2000. These steps reflect its constant adaptation to the norms and styles of each era.

Among the remarkable elements, the organ created by Jean-Baptiste Isnard (1784–189) and the screw staircases (massive of the bell tower, western façade, transept south) illustrate the architectural complexity of the site. The materials used — wooden vaults, brick and plaster — and the interventions of architects like Pierre-Adolphe Foulon highlight the various techniques used over the centuries. Today, the church embodies an architectural palimpsest, where each period has left its mark.

The successive protections (classifications and partial decommissionings) reveal the heritage issues associated with its conservation. The decisions of 1912, 1920, 1998 and 2000 bear witness to the debates on the authenticity and historical value of its components, including the arrow and bell tower. These administrative decisions are part of a broader history of preserving religious heritage in France, between respect for origins and modern adaptations.
