Origin and history
Saint-Étienne Martyr Church, located in Niozelles in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is a Romanesque religious building. Its choir and collateral date back to the 14th century, while the nave and facade were built in 1681. It precedes the seigneurial castle of Niozelles, erected in the sixteenth century, making it one of the oldest monuments in the commune.
Inside the church is home to notable heritage features, such as a 16th century statue of the Virgin with the Child, a painting of St. Stephen's Stoning (1807), and reliquary busts of the 18th and 19th centuries. The murals of the 18th and 19th centuries, some of which were the work of the Marseille painter Lamberti, were unfortunately covered after the Second Vatican Council.
A recent restoration, led by Dominique Gravier-Dutaud, brought the building back to life. The works included the creation of stained glass windows, the restoration of liturgical furniture, and the creation of new frescoes, such as The Holy Trinity and The Splendor of the Cross. The choir, adorned with a blue lapis-lazuli sky and golden stars, as well as the vault of the Baptistery, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, were especially highlighted.
