Church (Cd. A 179): entry by order of 28 December 1981
Origin and history
Sainte-Madeleine de La Ventrouze Church is a Catholic building located in the Orne department in Normandy. Dated from the late 15th century, it embodies the rural religious architecture of this period, with a simple nave and a choir ending with a flat bedside. Its bell tower, topped by an arrow, rises in the centre of the nave, while its original frame, decorated with traces of polychromy, bears witness to medieval constructive techniques.
In the 18th century, the bays of the choir and the north facade were modified to suit the tastes of the time. These transformations reflect the evolution of architectural styles, while preserving the original structure. The church also houses two seigneurial chapels, as well as statues and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries, illustrating its central role in local community and religious life.
Classified as historical monuments since 28 December 1981, the Church of Sainte-Madeleine is today a protected heritage, owned by the commune of La Ventrouze. Its inscription emphasizes its historical and architectural value, while ensuring its conservation for future generations. The building remains a remarkable example of Normandy's small rural churches, marked by centuries of history and devotion.
The 15th century frame, with its entry and punches, is a rare and precious element of the building. The visible traces of polychromy remind us that these structures were once painted, adding an aesthetic and symbolic dimension to the sacred space. These details, combined with the salient transept and flat bedside, offer an overview of the craftsmanship and piety of the medieval era.
The church of Sainte-Madeleine is part of a wider religious and architectural landscape, typical of Lower Normandy. Its history reflects the social and cultural transformations of the region, from its construction in the late Middle Ages to its adaptations to the following centuries. Today, it continues to play a role in collective memory and local heritage.
