Origin and history
The church Sainte-Marie-et-de-l'Assomption is located in Nouvron-Vingré, a commune in the Aisne department, in the Hauts-de-France region. This village, marked by a majority agricultural occupation (78.4% of the land in 2018), is crossed by rivers such as the Hozien Ru. Its history is closely linked to tragic events of the First World War, including the Vingré Combat in August 1914 and the execution of six French soldiers in December 1914, known as the Vingré martyrs.
The hamlet of Vingré, now part of the commune, was the scene of a military incident on 27 November 1914: soldiers of the 298th infantry regiment, accused of desertion after an orderly and then contradicted withdrawal, were summarily tried. A drawing of lots designated six of them, executed for the example on the following 4 December, on the order of General Étienne de Villaret. This episode illustrates the extreme disciplinary tensions of the Great War and remains a symbol of the injustices suffered by the shot for example.
Nouvron-Vingré, attached to the district of Soissons and to the community of communes Retz-en-Valois, maintains a local memory marked by the past. The church, although little documented in the available sources, is part of this rural territory where agriculture dominates (arable land and forests) and where traces of 20th century conflicts remain. Historical maps, such as Cassini (18th century), attest to the old land use, while censuses reveal a stable but declining population (202 inhabitants in 2023).
The region's altered ocean climate, with cold winters and regular precipitation, influences both agricultural activities and the preservation of built heritage. Although the religious building is not accurately dated in the sources, its existence is rooted in this geographical and historical context, between rural memory and the legacy of modern conflicts.
