Origin and history
The church Saint-Nicolas de Cellefrouin is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Cellefrouin, Charente (New Aquitaine). Built in the 4th quarter of the 11th century, it embodies a style of transition from 11th century Romanesque art to 12th century art. Its architecture includes a vaulted nave in a cradle, a transept surmounted by an octagonal dome and a square bell tower, as well as an apse framed by two apsidioles. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1907, it bears witness to the medieval heritage of the region.
The church is closely linked to the abbey Saint-Pierre de Cellefrouin, founded between 1019 and 1037 by Arnaud de Vitabre, bishop of Périgueux, under the Augustinian rule. This abbey, although distinct from the church of Saint-Nicolas, contributes to the religious and cultural influence of the territory. The building, owned by the commune, remains a remarkable example of Charentaise Romanesque architecture, with elements such as its dome and bell tower typical of the period.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance. The Merimée base lists its exact address (16260 Cellefrouin) and confirms its classification by order of 21 September 1907. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified, but its location in the Bourg de Cellefrouin makes it a central point of the village, reflecting its historical role in local community and spiritual life.
