Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Marie d'Espira-de-Conflent, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the Occitanie region, is a 12th century Romanesque building. It consisted of a single vaulted nave in a broken cradle, a transept and a three apse bedside. Its Romanesque architecture, including its semicircular bedside adorned with gear teeth friezes, is characteristic of Catalan Romanesque art. A northern apsidiole was replaced by a sacristy, and later lateral chapels were added.

In the 15th century, a massive tower tower was built, but it was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century because of its instability, replaced by a bell tower wall. The church houses a rich baroque furniture, including altarpieces and sculptures attributed to Catalan artists such as Joseph Sunyer, Louis Généres, Nègre and François Thierry. These works, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, bear witness to the artistic and religious importance of the place.

Ranked a historic monument in 1912, the church revealed in 2024 a 14th century medieval fresco, representing a crucifixion and a Virgin with the Child, discovered during restoration work. This discovery enriches the understanding of the building's artistic history. The site, former priory, is located in the heart of the village, in the valley of the Conflent, a region rich in Romanesque heritage.

The church is also known for its remarkable architectural elements, such as the double-brassed window of the apse, decorated with carved columns and capitals. These details, as well as geometric modillons and bevelled cornice, illustrate the mastery of the Romanesque artisans. The southern gate, decorated with animal motifs, and baroque altarpieces complete this exceptional heritage.

The historical context of the church reflects the religious and artistic evolution of the region, marked by the Catalan influence and the importance of Romanesque buildings in the Conflent Valley. These churches served as spiritual and community centres, playing a key role in local life. The presence of frescoes and baroque furniture highlights the continuity of its liturgical use throughout the centuries.
