Origin and history

The Church of St. Thomas of Belgodere, dedicated to San Tumasgiu, came into being in 1269 when Andrea Malaspina, Marquis of Massa, founded a first church on this strategic site offering an unobstructed view to the sea. This feudal lord, seduced by the defensive position and the panorama, established his castrum and gave the place his current name, Belgodère ("beautiful pleasure"), reflecting both his admiration for the landscape and the need to guard against barbaric raids.

The present structure is the result of two major construction phases: the 3rd quarter of the 16th century (circa 1560), when the building was erected thanks to donations and entrusted to the Olivetians, and the 4th quarter of the 18th century (with the addition of the choir in 1792). The Baroque-style church underwent critical restorations between 1872 and 1886 to remedy its disrepair. His bell tower was moved in 1913, while the paintings of the choir (1849) and the decorations of the facade were the work of Giuseppe Marchesi, famous Corsican artist.

Classified as a Historical Monument in 1987, the church is home to an exceptional artistic heritage: five paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries (including The Songs of St Joseph, gift of Cardinal Fesch), marble statues (Vierge of the Assumption, St.Antoine), and a carved altarpiece. These works, often linked to local brotherhoods such as that of the Blessed Sacrament, testify to the cultural richness of the Balagne under the influences of Genoese and French. The building, with its central nave and lateral chapels transformed into secondary naves, embodies the adaptation of religious forms to community needs.

The site is part of a turbulent historical context: the piève de Tuani, to which Belgodere belongs from the Middle Ages, is marked by seigneurial tensions (such as the assassination of Prior Malaspina in 1630) and territorial recompositions (creation of the canton of Belgodere in 1790). In the 20th century, the town, occupied by Italian troops in 1942-1943, saw its church become a symbol of cultural resistance, while the restoration of the Notre-Dame-de-Lozari chapel in 2013 illustrates the vitality of the local heritage.

Architecturally, the church is distinguished by its four cupolas styling the side chapels and its flat bedside, typical of the island baroque. Its portal, framed by Corinthian pilasters and surmounted by a triangular pediment, reflects classical Italian influences. The surrounding remains, such as the Genoese tower of Losari (XVI century) or the ruins of the convent of Servites, recall the defensive and spiritual role of Belgodere, a crossroads between mountain and coastline in Balagne.
