Origin and history

The church Saint-Trivier is a religious building located in Saint-Trivier-de-Courtes, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries, it also underwent modifications in the 19th century. This monument, typical of the rural churches of the Bresse, reflects the architectural evolutions and spiritual needs of the local community throughout the centuries. Its designation as a historical monument in 1982 reflects its heritage value and its importance in the cultural landscape of the region.

Medieval churches such as Saint-Trivier-de-Courtes served as a spiritual, social and sometimes political centre for the surrounding villages. At that time, Bresse was a region with a rural economy, where agriculture and livestock played a central role. These religious buildings were often at the heart of community gatherings, religious festivals and collective decisions, thus strengthening their role in local cohesion.

In 2020, a fire severely damaged the structure of the church bell tower, causing its collapse. This event marked a turning point in the recent history of the monument, requiring major restoration work. Despite this incident, the rest of the building remained intact, allowing the preservation work to continue. On November 17, 2025, a new belfry was installed, bearing two bells called "Germaine" and "Aubin", symbolizing the rebirth of this emblematic heritage.

The management of the Saint-Trivier church is the responsibility of the commune, which underlines its local anchor and its importance for the inhabitants. Protected elements, as defined by the 1982 Order, include the entire building, thereby ensuring its conservation for future generations. The location of the church, near Bourg-en-Bresse, also makes it a point of interest for visitors wishing to explore the religious heritage of the region.
