Origin and history

The Saint-Georges church of Ully-Saint-Georges, located in the department of Oise, is a composite building whose oldest parts date back to the years 1130-1140, with a transept and a first span of the lower side of the late Romanesque choir. These elements mark the early adoption of the vault of warheads, an innovation foreshadowing Gothic. The building was enlarged in the 13th century, including the addition of a belfry floor to the bell tower and the reconstruction of the eastern parts around 1265, including three cut-paned apses.

In the second quarter of the 16th century, the nave was redone in the flamboyant Gothic style, with an apparent structure and a southern collateral. The last keystone of the collateral, dated 1545, attests to this work. The church undergoes minor modifications in the Renaissance and modern times, but retains traces of its medieval history, like two sections of wall in opus spicatum potentially of the eleventh century.

Under the Ancien Régime, Ully-Saint-Georges was an important town in the bailiff of Senlis, whose seigneury was originally owned by the Counts of Beaumont-sur-Oise before being sold to the abbey of Saint-Denis in 1213. The parish, under the name of Saint Georges, is part of the diocese of Beauvais. The church, classified as a historical monument in 1951, is now affiliated with the parish of Sainte-Claire in Mouy, with occasional Masses.

The building presents a varied architecture, with Romanesque influences in the crucifixes and the first spans of the lower sides of the choir, and later Gothic elements in the choir and apses. The capitals, vaults and window networks reflect these stylistic transitions. Outside, the western facade and bell tower, with its broken arched bays and adorned cornice, illustrate this diversity.

The church furniture includes classified elements, such as a 14th century Virgin with Child, an equestrian statue of St George of the 16th century, and stained glass windows of the 15th and 16th centuries. These works, as well as the 17th century woodwork and altars dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Nicholas, testify to the artistic and historical richness of the site.

The history of the parish, marked by notebooks of grievances in 1789 and upheavals during the Revolution, shows the importance of the church in local life. Despite periods of decline, such as the sale of factory property in 1793, the building remains a symbol of the region's religious and architectural heritage.
