Origin and history
The Church of Saint Paul of Vila, also called Sant Pau d'Envistadors in Catalan, is a religious monument located in the town of Reynès. Its location in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in the Occitanie region, makes it an architectural testimony anchored in the historical landscape of the Roussillon. Although its exact origin remains unknown, its style suggests a pre-Roman foundation, characteristic of the first Christian constructions in the region.
The building underwent major transformations in the 17th century, during which time it was profoundly redesigned. These changes, typical of the modern era, were able to alter certain structural elements of origin while integrating Baroque or classical characteristics. The church is thus part of a double temporality: the medieval one of its presumed foundations, and the more recent one of its renovation.
The building is mentioned in specialized works such as the forgotten Romanesque Churches of Roussillon (Géraldine Mallet, 2003) and Catalunya romànica (1996), which highlight its heritage interest. These bibliographic references place the church in a wider network of studies on Catalan and Occitane religious architecture, while confirming its roots in local history. Its Catalan name, Sant Pau d'Envistadors, also reflects the linguistic and cultural heritage of the region.
