Origin and history
Saint-Martin de Masseilles Church is a Catholic church located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine. Built in the 12th century, it is distinguished by its medieval architecture and its iconic bell tower. The building was partially listed as historical monuments in 1925, especially for its facade and bell tower, which date from the Romanesque period. These architectural elements testify to the religious and community importance of the building at that time.
In the 15th century, a portal was added to the church, illustrating a stylistic evolution after its initial construction. Inside, recently restored murals decorate the walls and recall the artistic and spiritual role of the building throughout the centuries. These frescoes, although not dated precisely in the sources, contribute to the heritage wealth of the place.
The church is located in the heart of the village of Masseilles, which highlights its anchoring in local life since the Middle Ages. Today it belongs to the municipality and remains a symbol of the Gironde's religious and architectural heritage. Its partial inscription in 1925 reflects the desire to preserve this witness of the twelfth century, while highlighting its subsequent additions, such as the Gothic portal.
