Origin and history
The church Sainte-Marie de Buoux is a religious building located in the village of Buoux, in Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It finds its origins in the twelfth century, as evidenced by a papal bubble of Adrien IV dated 1158, which attests to its existence in a Romanesque style. The current building, mainly marked by the 15th century, underwent renovations in the 16th century, reflecting several architectural periods.
The church is built of stone, with typical features of the Provençal novel, such as the foothills, the lauze covering the roof, and a bell tower with two bays. Inside, an altar of the seventeenth century and an ancient Carolingian altar, now used as a benigner, bear witness to its rich past. A Gothic engraving is still visible near the triumphal arch, adding to its historical interest.
The Sainte-Marie church is surrounded by its original cemetery, which reinforces its heritage character. It was listed as historic monuments on 11 October 2005, recognizing its architectural and cultural value. Its architecture and interior elements, such as the altar and engravings, make it a notable example of Provencal religious heritage.
