Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of Courthioust, located in Colonard-Corubert in Orne, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the tenth century. The oldest parts, dated from the 11th century, include a unique nave and a cul-de-four apse, characteristic of Romanesque architecture. The church is mentioned in 1112 among the possessions of the Abbey of Marmoutier, which attests to its medieval importance.
The western facade, pierced by a 13th century portal, bears witness to a stylistic evolution towards the Gothic, although its porch has now disappeared. In the 19th century, the bell tower, then in poor condition, was replaced in 1929 by the current structure. The building, owned by the commune, was classified as historical monuments by order of 29 December 1983, thereby recognizing its heritage value.
The church illustrates the architectural transformations that occurred between the Middle Ages and the modern era. Its history is linked to that of the Abbey of Marmoutier, a major religious institution in Normandy. The preservation of its Romanesque and Gothic elements makes it a representative example of Norman rural religious heritage, marked by centuries of cult and community practices.
