Origin and history
The church of Saint-Maurice de Gonsans, located in the Doubs department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, finds its origins in the Middle Ages. A first mention of a church on this site dates back to 1138, attesting to an ancient religious presence in the commune. The present building, however, is the result of a major reconstruction undertaken in 1724, after the old church was judged in ruins in 1722. The plans of the new building were drawn up by Pierre Bassignot, and the works quickly ended, allowing a solemn consecration in 1776 by Monsignor Jouffroy-Gonsans, then Bishop of Gap. The latter, originally from the region, made a lasting mark of local history by his involvement in the religious life of the diocese.
The architecture of the church reflects the specificities of franco-comtoises, with a bell tower topped by an imperial dome (or domed dome), characteristic of the region. The eastern and southern facades of the bell tower are covered with tavaillons, traditional wood planks protecting the walls from the weather. Inside, the unique nave, arched and supported by Tuscan pillars, ends with a blind apse. Four side chapels complete this space, offering a balance between structural simplicity and decorative richness. Between 1869 and 1872, the interior was completely redesigned with an ambitious painted decoration, combining geometric motifs highlighting the figurative structures and scenes (Saint-Maurice, three saints, and four episodes of the life of the Virgin).
The church furniture has several rooms classified as historical monuments as objects. Among them, a 16th century stone altarpiece, carved in a flamboyant Gothic style, represents Christ on the cross surrounded by the two larrons, the Virgin and the Apostles. A Virgin of piety and an equestrian statue of Saint-Georges, both in polychrome stone dating from the 16th century, as well as the baptismal fonts of the 18th century in carved and gilded wood, complete this remarkable ensemble. These elements testify to the artistic richness of the building, despite its modest size.
The Saint-Maurice church was listed as historic monuments on 3 August 2009, recognizing its heritage value. Today attached to the parish of the Plateau de Bouclans (diocese of Besançon), it remains an active place of worship while attracting lovers of sacred art and regional architecture. Its 19th century interior decor, exceptionally well preserved, makes it a rare example of the religious decoration campaigns of this time in Franche-Comté.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) also highlight the role of architect Nicolas Pierrot in the design or transformation of the building, although his exact intervention is not detailed. The church property belongs to the municipality of Gonsans, guaranteeing its preservation for future generations. Its precise address, 10 Chemin des Creux, allows visitors to easily locate it in this village of Doubs, between mountains and limestone plateaus.
