Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Chaniers Church is a Catholic church in the Charente-Maritime department in the commune of Chaniers. It has been classified as historic monuments since 14 September 1912, reflecting its heritage and architectural significance. Its bell tower houses an exceptional ringing made up of five flying bells, a rarity in the department.

The oldest anonymous bell dates from 1676 and weighs 390 kilos. The other four were set up at the initiative of Father Ernest Vieuille, priest of the parish for several decades. Three of them commemorate the priestly anniversaries of the Abbé: "Marie-Thérèse-Philomene" (1934, 25 years of priesthood), "Henriette-Lucie-Germaine" (1959, 50 years of priesthood), and "Marie" (1962, 35 years of presence in Chaniers). The bell "Pierre-Jean-Marie-Vianney", melted in 1937, completes this unique ensemble.

Abbé Vieuille, a prominent figure in local history, deeply marked the church and its environment. A street with its name today runs along the building. His unfinished project was to add a bumblebee of more than one tonne, giving a note of re 3. The current bells, founded by renowned artisans such as the Bollée (Orléans) and the Paccard (Annecy) foundry, illustrate the importance of the campanary tradition in France.

The ringing of five bells is a rare case in Charente-Maritime, where fewer than five churches own as many. This set reflects both the commitment of the local community and the know-how of French founders, spreading over nearly three centuries of religious and technical history.
