Origin and history
The church Sainte-Geneviève de Guénézan is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of Bévis, in the department of Côtes-d-Armor in Brittany. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, it illustrates the religious architecture of this period, marked by elements such as a fronton adorning the entrance door and a bell tower decorated with gargoyles. The nave, covered in the shape of a ship's hull, reveals farms apparent with strongly curved legs, a technical and aesthetic peculiarity of the era.
The adjacent 16th century calvary rests on a base supporting a polygonal barrel. The stone cross, carved on its two sides with distinct motifs, is framed by representations of the Virgin and Saint John. These artistic elements bear witness to the iconographic and symbolic richness of the Breton religious monuments of the Renaissance.
The church and its placister, as well as the Calvary, were inscribed as historical monuments by two successive decrees, on 19 February 1964 and 28 April 1964. This protection underscores their heritage value and their role in local history. The building, owned by the municipality of B visà, remains an active place of worship while constituting a major architectural and historical testimony for the region.
