Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Champillet is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Champillet, in the department of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it belongs to the Romanesque period and is distinguished by a structure divided into two parts: an ancient part, including the choir, the apse, the transepts and two apsidioles, and a modern part added in the 19th century, including a bell tower brought back in front of the transept cross. The building is vaulted in cradle and cul-de-four, with an arcade geminied above the choir which probably served as a bell tower originally.
Saint Peter's Church has been classified as historical monuments since March 10, 1934. It depends on the archdiocese of Bourges and the parish of Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre. Its architecture reflects the Romanesque features, with elements such as the apsidioles and the transept cross, while its current, more recent bell tower shows a later evolution. The small vaulted lodge between the choir and the north-east apsidiole, accessible by two doors, adds a notable architectural peculiarity.
Located in the natural region of Boischaut Sud, the church is part of a historical and religious landscape marked by the presence of many similar buildings. Its inscription in historical monuments underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected building and its cultural value for the town of Champillet and its surroundings.
