Origin and history

The Cross of the Combine is a monumental cross erected in 1561, as evidenced by the date engraved on its structure. Located near the Road de la Combille in Châtelblanc, in the Doubs department, it is made of limestone and cut stone. Its carved faces represent on one side Christ on the cross and on the other side a Virgin with the Child. With a height of 3.35 meters, it illustrates the religious art of the late Renaissance in Franche-Comté.

The cross was listed as historical monuments by order of 23 August 1989, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune of Châtelblanc and stands as a witness to local devotional practices in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its location, close to a rural road, suggests a role as a landmark or a place of prayer for travellers and residents.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as a protected monument and its precise location (cadastre AB 131). The cross thus combines a religious, artistic and historical function, reflecting the Christian traditions of the region in modern times.
