Origin and history

The Hospital of the Holy Spirit of Provins is a former medieval hospital located in the upper town of Provins, Seine-et-Marne. Founded in 1177 by Henri I of Champagne, it is distinguished by its vaulted lower room, called the vault of the Holy Spirit. This monument illustrates the 12th century hospital architecture, with a structure divided into spans, some of which are protected as historical monuments.

The vault of the Holy Spirit, the central element of the hospital, has been partially classified since 1937 for its six southern spans, while the three northern spans were inscribed in 1968. Located at 36 rue de Jouy, this building demonstrates the importance of charitable institutions in the Middle Ages, especially in a city like Provins, which was then prosperous thanks to its commercial and political role in Champagne.

The hospital, now owned by the municipality, reflects the medieval social organization where religious and hospital establishments played a key role in assisting the poorest. Its architecture, marked by vaults and a strategic location in the upper city, makes it a typical example of the hospital buildings of the time, linked to both Christian charity and medieval urbanism.
