Origin and history

La Croix de Montauriol is a monumental cross located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Aude, in the region of Occitanie. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it was erected in 1776, as indicated by the date engraved on its pedestal. This monument is singularized by its stone execution and the rare presence of a rooster carved at the top, a special feature in Languedoc. Its square base, decorated with volute consoles and small hollow paintings, supports a curved column surmounted by a cross with chamfered edges.

The octagonal pedestal bears the letters "BER PU", the meaning of which remains undetermined. The cross was listed as historical monuments by order of 27 September 1948, because of its architectural interest and rarity in the region. It is located on the public square of Montauriol, at the approximate address 4 Place du Pastellier, and belongs to the commune.

The design of the cross, with its sculpted details such as the feathers of the cock or geometric motifs, reflects a craftsmanship typical of the late eighteenth century. Although its seniority is modest compared to other monuments, its preservation bears witness to the symbolic importance of the crosses in the public spaces of Languedoc, often linked to religious or commemorative functions.
