Socle of the Cross: inscription by decree of 22 October 1937
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Longesse is a historical monument located in the Val-d'Oise department of Île-de-France. Dated from the 16th century, it bears witness to the funeral architecture of this period, marked by religious and commemorative achievements in public spaces. Its base, the oldest and most emblematic element, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 22 October 1937, thus highlighting its heritage value.
In the 16th century, the cemetery crosses played a central role in the lives of rural and urban communities. They served not only as a religious landmark, but also as a gathering place for ceremonies and commemorations. In the context of Île-de-France, a region marked by strong agricultural and artisanal activity, these monuments reflected both local piety and social organization around parishes.
The location of this cross in Longuesse is attested by the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, which specify its approximate address at 24 Rue du Moulin. The accuracy of this location is considered satisfactory, with a score of 7 out of 10, allowing to clearly identify its location in the municipality. Municipal property, it remains accessible to the public, although its current use (visits, events) is not detailed in available sources.
The inclusion of the base in 1937 illustrates the authorities' early interest in preserving local heritage. This legal protection comes in a national context of increased protection of monuments after the First World War, when many historic buildings were listed and protected. Today, this cross constitutes a material testimony of the religious and social history of Longesse and its region.
