Origin and history
La Croix de Cordes-sur-Ciel is a monumental medieval cross emblematic of the commune of Cordes-sur-Ciel, located in the Tarn department in the Occitan region. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its support in red sandstone and its wrought iron structure covered with gilding. Set under the central hall, it illustrates the local metallurgical craftsmanship and the symbolic importance of the urban crosses in the Renaissance.
Classified as a historical monument by ministerial decree of 28 June 1912, this cross is part of the protected heritage of the city. Its location under the halls, a historic place of commerce and gathering, highlights its role both religious and social in the daily life of Cordes-sur-Ciel. The materials used – red sandstone for the base and gold iron for the cross – reflect the resources and know-how available in the Tarn at that time.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Wikipedia bases, specify that the cross is owned by the municipality. Its exact address, 43 Grand-Rue Raymond VII, and its Insee code (81069) confirm its anchoring in the historic center of Cordes-sur-Ciel. Although the archives mention an approximate location (level 5/10), its status as a listed monument guarantees its preservation as a witness to the medieval and reborn heritage of Occitanie.
