Croix du Petit-Vedeix (Cad. C, not cadastre): entry by order of 15 November 1988
Origin and history
The cross of the Petit-Vedeix is located on the route of an ancient Roman road linking Limoges to Saintes, marking a historic crossing point. This monument, dated precisely from 1659 thanks to an inscription on its base, is distinguished by its cut-pan base and its chamfered barrel, suggesting a larger original size. Its style, mixing a Greek cross with pottery ends and an archaic Christ, reflects the 17th century artistic influences in the region.
The reverse of the cross has a radiant sun, a symbol common in Christian iconography of the time, while its main face presents a crucified Christ with archaic stylistic treatment. Placed on a stone base, this cross was classified as a Historic Monument by order of 15 November 1988, stressing its heritage importance. Today, owned by the commune of Saint-Cyr, it bears witness to the role of the road crosses in structuring local landscapes and beliefs.
The location of the cross, near the so-called Le Petit-Vedeix, and its inscription in the Merimée base (code INSEE 87141) confirm its territorial anchorage in Upper Vienna. Although its GPS location is considered satisfactory (note 6/10), its access and visibility remain linked to its rural context, between historical memory and religious heritage.
