Origin and history

The dread of Ermitebaita, located in Sare in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is part of the fortifications of the Rhune, a collection of military structures built or reinforced between the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century. These fortifications were intended to defend the Franco-Spanish border, particularly during the conflicts between France and Spain and the Anglo-Hispano-Portuguese coalition led by the future Duke of Wellington.

The dread was erected in a context of military tensions, in preparation for the fighting of 1793-1794 between the army of the Western Pyrenees and the Spanish forces. It also witnessed the defence organized by Marshal Soult in 1813 against British troops. These works are part of a broader strategy of protecting the Pyrenees, including protohistoric fortifications reused in contemporary times.

The dread of Ermitebaita has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1992, highlighting its heritage importance. It illustrates the military architecture of the time and its role in conflicts related to the Franco-Spanish border. Historical sources, such as Jacques Antz's or Francis Gaudeul's work, document his integration into a larger defence network, including forts such as Ascain's or the Louis XIV dread of Sare.

Today, the dread remains a material testimony of Napoleonic wars and border defence strategies. Its location on the Rhune mountain, near the border, makes it an emblematic site of the military history of the French Basque Country.
