Stone road cross from the former cimetiere of Farlon : classification by decree of 7 March 1906

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de La Roche-sur-Foron is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Haute-Savoie. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century, it embodies the religious and architectural heritage of the region. Its precise location, though not detailed, fits into the urban or rural landscape of La Roche-sur-Foron, reflecting the practices of devotion and road signs at that time.

Classified as historical monuments in 1906, this cross illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of medieval buildings in the early twentieth century. The road crosses, often erected at crossroads or at village entrances, served as spiritual and practical landmarks for travellers and residents. Their presence also marked an affirmation of the Christian faith in public space, in a context where the Church played a central role in daily life.

At the end of the Middle Ages, the Haute-Savoie region, then integrated into the Duchy of Savoie, was marked by a rural economy and transalpine trade. The road crosses, like La Roche-sur-Foron, were part of a network of religious symbols punctuating the territories. Their function often exceeded the strictly spiritual framework to include social dimensions, such as the commemoration of local events or the protection of travellers.
