Origin and history
The Lavoir de Lambesc, located in the municipality of the same name in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, dates from the second half of the 16th century. This monument, typical of the collective infrastructures of the time, was an essential place for the inhabitants, serving both as a washing point and as a sociability. Its architecture reflects the practical needs and local traditions of the Provencal Renaissance.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 28 December 1984, the washhouse is today owned by the municipality of Lambesc. Its location, initially recorded rue de la République, was specified via approximate GPS coordinates (5407 Rue de la Coquière). Although its geographical accuracy is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), it remains an emblematic vestige of the region's water and communal heritage.
In modern times, washhouses played a central role in the daily life of provencal villages. Meeting places for lavender trees, they also structured the social organization around water, a rare and precious resource. Their preservation, like that of Lambesc's wash, allows us to understand the collective uses and hydraulic engineering of the 16th–12th centuries.
