Origin and history

Confracourt is a 19th-century public monument located in the municipality of the same name in Haute-Saône. This type of building, often built near springs or streams, was mainly used for washing laundry. Its architecture reflects the practical and social needs of the time, where washes were places of meeting and collective work for the women of the village.

Confracourt, like many rural communes of Burgundy-Franche-Comté in the 19th century, was marked by an agricultural and artisanal economy. Washers played a central role in everyday life, facilitating domestic tasks while strengthening community ties. Their construction also addressed public health concerns, which were becoming increasingly important at this time.

This wash, registered with historical monuments in 1979, bears witness to this utilitarian and social heritage, today preserved for its historical and architectural value.
