Wash; water with its ice and walls; Water nozzle and water supply system (Box AB 349, 355): registration by order of 17 March 1997

Origin and history

Argenteuil-sur-Armançon is an emblematic monument of the municipality, built between 1834 and 1835 in a neo-classical style. It is distinguished by its arches in the middle of the hanger open towards the south, as well as by its large pond fed with living water, typical of the washeries of this time. This type of construction reflects the importance of washhouses in the daily life of villages in the 19th century, serving both as a place for washing and as a woman's sociality.

The washhouse was registered as historic monuments by order of 17 March 1997, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The protected elements include not only the wash itself, but also the adjacent water body, its glacis, its walls, as well as the nozzle and water supply system. Owned by the commune, there remains an architectural and historical testimony of the community organization and hygienic practices of the time.

Located in the department of Yonne, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, this lavoir illustrates the evolution of public infrastructure in the 19th century. At that time, washbasins were essential areas for residents, often built near rivers to facilitate access to water. Their architecture, like Argenteuil-sur-Armançon, blended utility and aesthetics, integrating decorative elements inspired by dominant artistic currents, such as neo-classicism.
