Origin and history
The Lavoir de Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines is a building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument, typical of the buildings dedicated to collective laundry, reflects the social and hygienic practices of the 19th and 20th centuries in French rural areas. Its architecture and spatial organization were designed to facilitate laundry washing, often a collective and feminine task.
Listed under the title of historical monuments by order of 2 March 1971, this lavoir illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of buildings linked to daily and community life. Protected elements include facades, roofs and the interior of the washhouse itself. This type of monument, which is often abandoned today, recalls the evolution of lifestyles and public infrastructure in the French countryside.
