Origin and history

Brienon-sur-Armançon is a typical 18th-century public building built in 1762 in the municipality of the same name, located in the Yonne department. This monument, of circular shape, is distinguished by its gallery covered with Burgundy tiles, an emblematic material of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Access to the washhouse is through a staircase, reflecting a utility architecture adapted to the local needs of the time, especially for washing laundry in the community.

The construction of this washhouse is part of a period when water infrastructure played a central role in the daily life of the villages. These spaces, often located near streams or springs, served as meeting places and collective work for women, mainly women. The classification of the washyard as a historical monument in 1982 underscores its heritage importance, thus preserving a concrete testimony of 18th century social and architectural practices in rural areas.

The washhouse is located precisely at Boulevard Maréchal-de-Lattre-de-Tassigny, although approximate GPS coordinates also place it on Rue Delattre. These geographical details, combined with its legal protection, make it a key part of Brienon-sur-Armançon's heritage. Owned by the municipality, it illustrates the commitment of local authorities to the conservation of their history, while offering an overview of the construction techniques and materials used in modern times in Burgundy.
