Origin and history

The Lair de la Mutasse, located in Seuil-d'Argonne in the department of the Meuse (Great East region), is a building built in the 4th quarter of the 18th century. This type of monument, dedicated to laundry, reflects the importance of collective infrastructure in the rural villages of the time. It was a place of sociability and shared work, essential to the daily lives of the inhabitants.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, the wash was registered by ministerial decree on 9 September 1992. Today it belongs to the commune of Seuil-d'Argonne, stressing its heritage role and its preservation. Its location, at the impasse of the Mutasse, is documented in the Merimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10).

At the time of its construction, washhouses were central areas in villages, often fed by springs or streams. They illustrated the community organisation around domestic tasks, while meeting growing hygiene needs. Their architecture, generally simple and functional, varied according to local resources and regional traditions.
