Lavoir (old) (case AN 185): entry by order of 1 December 1989

Origin and history

The former Lavoir de Regnéville-sur-Mer is a basin located in the Manche department, in the commune of Regnéville-sur-Mer. It is located between the local castle and the shore of the Channel, in both a maritime and historical setting. This wash, typical of the collective infrastructure of the 19th century, was mainly used for washing linen by the inhabitants of the village.

The washhouse was registered as a historical monument by an order dated 1 December 1989. This official protection underscores its heritage and architectural importance, although the details of its history and construction remain little documented in available sources. Today, it belongs to the municipality and remains visible, although its access is restricted for security reasons.

Washers, such as Regnéville-sur-Mer, played a central role in the daily lives of rural and coastal communities. They were places of female sociability, where women met to wash laundry while exchanging news. Their placement near streams or shorelines, as here, facilitated water supply and washing of linen.
