Washing with its basin and the bridge over the Vaux-des-Bouches creek (Box A 550, 1373): inscription by order of 8 October 1962
Origin and history
The Lavoir de Voutenay-sur-Cure is an emblematic building located in the village of the same name, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it embodies the utilitarian architecture of this period, dedicated to daily tasks such as laundry. Its designation as a historic monument in 1962 is a testament to its heritage importance, particularly for its basin and the adjacent bridge that spans Vaux-des-Bouches Creek.
Washers, such as that of Voutenay-sur-Cure, played a central role in the life of rural communities in the 19th century. A place of meeting and collective work, they reflected the social organization and domestic activities of the time. In this region, marked by a rural and artisanal economy, these infrastructures facilitated household chores while strengthening links between the inhabitants. Their preservation today makes it possible to understand the ways of life and social practices then.
